Varda Sharon Kramer lives in the northern part of Israel, near the city of Haifa, and has located her studio in a Druze minority village that lives in cooperation with the Israelis.

"I usually paint on topographical maps which always triggered my imagination. Maps are like a container, asking for some content. I wonder how rich and intensive they are; a piece of paper, called a map, that has an enormous amount of two-dimensional signs and symbols, that should stand for the richness of the earth, for countries, for politics and borders. I can spend hours gazing in front of my maps, waiting for the trapped images I could see inside, to stand up at my command. Then, I would redraw the maps interweaving my own lines and signs with those of the maps.  

My work is a process of recollecting memories. These memories are being revived from an existential and infinite collection of memories that represents the relations and the struggles between my inner world, and the outer world, between my personal past, and my parents’ past; between my everyday physical and mental life, and what is happening in the external world; between my individual history, and the communal, political history of the place I am living in a place, which is saturated with wars, grief, and bereavement".
